Somewhat resembling a plant, such as a garden weed, with its perianth unfurling into petals and sepals. Garden weeds are generally thought of as being ugly pests. Next time, give them a closer look, and you'll see how beautiful they really are, whilst providing an important link in the grander ecosystem. The image is in fact the crystallisation of an analgesic medication, imaged with polarised light microscopy

When two fluids of different surface tensions are mixed, a complex interplay of fluid dynamics unfolds. In this case, the fluid is a mixture of washing up liquid and water. By introducing some sugar into the mixture, the lifetime of the film can be extended, whilst the continuous film breaks up into islands, as seen here. The islands are lipid globules floating on a thin film whose thickness is too thin to support the interference of light, so that it appears as black as space. On the other hand, the islands and continuous lipid film produce dazzling interference colours because their film thickness is on the same order of magnitude as the wavelength of light. Variations in colour are a result of the modulations in the thickness of the film. The film is thickest in the lower right of the image and gradually thins out diagonally towards the upper right, before completely falling off to several nanometers where it becomes jet black. Magnification 150x. Imaged with polarised light microscopy

Growing profusely along the roadside hedgerows on the Atlantic coast of western Ireland are the butterfly-loving orange-red spiky blooms of Montbretia. However, looks can be deceiving. This is not a photograph of Montbretia, but a close-up of chemicals found in skin cream - lactic and salicylic acid. When mixed in a specific ratio, this remarkable formation self-assembles when the conditions are ripe. The mixture undergoes two stages of crystallisation, with this being the second stage. Imaged with polarised light microscopy
