  • Pyrocystis fusiformis is a non-motile, tropical marine dinoflagellate with a length of up to one millimeter. The dinoflagellates are bioluminescent when disturbed or stimulated. In coastal waters this organism causes glowing effects after dark, the so-called marine luminescence. P. fusiformis was first introduced in 1876 in the Proceedings described by the Royal Society of London. Imaged with scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
