Atoms on the surface of a metal, in the style of Aboriginal art. This highly creative and unique design was made in several steps. First, the material was imaged using field ion microscopy, which shows the arrangement of surface atoms in the form of bright spots. The black and white image was then projected onto canvas and each dot oil-painted by hand. Some artistic license was used in the interpretation. Surface of a cannabis leaf (Cannabis sativa). The pointed hairs are called lithocyst cells, containing cystolyths (calcium carbonate crystals). Glandular cells called trichomes are present in the foreground. Capitate trichomes have stalks, whereas peltate trichomes are rounded and closer to the leaf surface. Trichomes secrete a resin containing tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the main psychoactive part of the cannabis plant, used as a drug.
