Bacterial colony, about 0.5 cm across. Two strains of bacteria were treated with special dyes, called fluorescent labels, to emit either yellow or blue light in the fluorescence microscope. Single cells were allowed to grow and multiply and then interact with each other. The yellow strain dominates in the center of the colony but, at the outer part, the blue strain dominates. This is in part due to a toxic substance passed from one strain to the other upon contact Image by Dr. Ioannis Passaris with Marjan Van der Woude, using the Bioscience Technology Facility, University of York (UK), as part of a research project on the role of these toxins in bacterial “warfare”, funded by the BBSRC, UK

Surface of a cannabis leaf (Cannabis sativa). The pointed hairs are called lithocyst cells, containing cystolyths (calcium carbonate crystals). Glandular cells called trichomes are present in the foreground. Capitate trichomes have stalks, whereas peltate trichomes are rounded and closer to the leaf surface. Trichomes secrete a resin containing tetrahydrocannabinol, which is the main psychoactive part of the cannabis plant, used as a drug. Hairs surrounding the mouth of a mosquito larva. Flattened curved hairs are seen, each with a small comb-like row of spines. The hairs beat through water filtering out algal spores, scattered pollen, bacteria and other micro-organisms on which the larva feeds. The larva swims either through propulsion with its mouth hairs or by jerky movements of its body, and so at this stage of development is known as a "wiggler". Apart from its well-adapted feeding mechanism, the larva posseses a tube through which it breathes at the surface. Surface of a kidney stone. These hard deposits are made of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys, often when urine becomes concentrated, which allows the minerals to crystallize and stick together. Kidney stones can affect any part of the urinary tract, from kidneys to bladder, with varying levels of severity, depending on size. Crystalline manganese oxide nanoparticle. The features in this image are atoms of manganese and oxygen, a form of manganese oxide used in the production of lithium ion batteries, a common type of rechargable battery used in portable electronic devices. The image was made using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). High-energy electrons are passed through a thin section of material and collected on the other side to form an image. Colors added later, to help visualize the positions of different atoms Credit: AMMRF, University of Sydney via Science Photo Library
