Alveoli Single Coaster

NANOVIZZ

  • Section through lung alveoli (blue) and red blood cells (red). Gas is exchanged via alveoli in the lungs, where oxygen is taken up by the red blood cells and carbon dioxide released for exhalation out of the body. Red blood cells have a curved (biconcave) surface, which produces a double-lobed shape when seen in vertical cross-section. The image was made using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), in which high-energy electrons are passed through a thin section of tissue and collected on the other side to form an image. The colors are added later, to help visualize the different features
