Alveoli Ceramic Mug

Pixels

  • Lung tissue showing red blood cells (red) and alveoli (blue). Gas is exchanged via alveoli in the lungs, where oxygen is taken up by red blood cells and carbon dioxide released for exhalation from the body. Red blood cells have a curved (biconcave) surface, which produces a double-lobed shape when seen in vertical cross-section. Imaged using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). High-energy electrons are passed through a thin section of tissue and collected on the other side to form an image. Colors added later, to help visualize different features
